Designing and Brewing a Berliner Weisse

Howdy Sour Beer Fans! Funky and sour beers have been gaining momentum for quite some time now.  But for all the barrel aged sours and delicious Brettanomyces laced saisons: where have all the Berliner Weisses gone?  To my surprise there are less than twenty widely available American commercial examples of this classic style, such as The Bruery’s Hottenroth, White Birch’s Berliner Weisse and Nodding Head’s Berliner Weisse. That’s surprisingly low when compared to the plethora of more esoteric styles of sour beer widely available.  More shocking (well, not too shocking considering the Germans have adopted lager as the core...

Jester King Aurelian Lure

Howdy Sour Beer Fans! While hanging out with Dr. Lambic and a few others during an epic night of sour tasting, I was treated to a bottle of Jester King’s Aurelian Lure. This is the third fruit sour offering I’ve had from Jester King, which brews in Austin, Texas. The previous two were exceptional (Nocturn Chrysalis & Atrial Rubicite), but this delicious apricot sour may be my favorite Jester King release yet! Aurelian Lure poured with a light haze and a golden honey color, forming a medium level of white head. Aroma wise, the beer filled my nose directly...

Hanssens Oude Kriek

Howdy Sour Beer Fans! I recently had the chance to taste a favorite of mine, Hanssens Oude Kriek.   I often drink gueuze and kriek from these outstanding blenders but just realized there was no review of Hanssens Oude Kriek posted to the site.  Well, don’t worry!  Your old pal Sour Brew has got you covered.  For me, Hanssens ranks up there with Drie Fonteinen and Cantillon when it comes to producing delicious gueuze and fruit lambics, but is often overlooked when compared to the more famous lambic brewers and blenders. However, Hanssens Oude Kriek is very much a world-class...

Brewing a Gose

Howdy Sour Beer Fans! It’s been awhile since your pal Sour Brew has posted an article.  This is because I went and did a dumb thing… I got an internship at a local brewery. I’m excited to say that after three months I haven’t quit and still love to brew, so I think I may have found a new career.  Also after being there for only a short time, I was able to design and brew my own beer, and better yet it was the brewery’s first sour beer! After much discussion with the head brewer, I convinced him...

Crooked Stave Surette Provision Saison

Howdy Sour Beer Fans! Lately I’ve been slacking a little bit on content, but with good reason! I completed my BJCP online exam, signed up for my tasting exam, plus I’m working toward my Cicerone certification. Even with all of that, I decided that I needed to review a fantastic saison by Crooked Stave, Surette Provision Saison. We cracked this bad boy during the Armand 4 Zomer tasting, on June 21st, and it was a great warm up to night. I’m looking forward to sampling more from Crooked Stave in the future. When opened and poured, Surette has a...
